Our Mission...

Reach Out and Read makes literacy promotion a standard part of pediatric primary care so that children grow up with books and a love of reading.

Our Model...

In the exam room, trained doctors and nurses talk to parents about the importance of reading aloud.

At each check-up from six months through five years, the child receives a new book to take home.

Clinic waiting rooms are transformed into literacy-rich areas with volunteer readers modeling techniques of reading aloud.

Make A Donation

Nearly 175,000 children in New Jersey live in poverty, according to the
2000 US Census. Imagine a childhood without “Green Eggs & Ham,” “Curious George,” “Goodnight Moon” or “ If you Give a Mouse a Cookie.” Yet, thousands of children in our community may grow up without ever enjoying these classics of childhood unless you help.

Please help Reach Out and Read New jersey put books in the hands of children who may grow up without them. And don’t forget, your donation is tax deductible.

What Your Support Can Accomplish:

$2,500 helps us provide the full, five-year program to 50 children
$1000 helps provide the Reach Out and Read program to 20 children
$250 helps provide the Reach Out and Read program to a family with five children
$50 enables us to provide the full, five-year program to one child

Funding for Reach Out and Read New Jersey is facilitated through the Reach Out and Read National Office Finance Department. Reach Out and Read, Inc. is a nonprofit, tax exempt organization whose mission is to make literacy a standard part of primary pediatric care, so that children grow up with books and a love of reading. Reach Out and Read trains doctors and nurses to advise parents about the importance of reading aloud and to give books to children at pediatric check-ups from six months to five years of age, with a special focus on children growing up in poverty. By building on the unique relationship between parents and medical providers, Reach Out and Read helps families and communities encourage early literacy skills so children enter school prepared for success in reading.

Your gift is very much appreciated. Contributions to Reach Out and Read are deductible to the fullest extent of the law. We are proud of the way we manage our funds. We ensure that every donation is used to the maximum benefit of the children who need help the most. For the fiscal year ending June 30, 2004, according to our Form 990, Reach Out and Read's revenue and support totaled $8,899,151. Of our expenses, 91% was spent directly in support of Reach Out and Read's mission. Fundraising costs for the year were 5% of total expenses and 46% of expenses went to administrative costs.
